District to clean up ‘nuisance’ properties

Design of the District of Hope’s flag was also discussed at the May 8 council meeting.

The only submission that passes the District of Hope’s flag design competition’s requirements by Scot Bell of Vancouver. Bell’s submission could not be used because he is not a resident of Hope.

Council also discussed two other smaller items of interest at the May 8 meeting.

“Nuisance” property on Highway 1

Council will proceed with doing renovations to the properties on 489 and 508 Trans-Canada Highway, after its owner, Richard Madison did not appear at council, nor did any delegates.

Council had initially set an April 30 deadline, but extended that to May 8 at the request of Madison.

“The Coles Notes version of this would be that we would undertake the exact actions of a [request] of Mr. Madison, but we would oversee those actions and those actions would be billed back to Mr. Madison in a form of a bill,” said Mayor Wilfried Vicktor.

Vicktor said if Madison does not pay, it will go into his property taxes. He also said that demolition should not happen to reduce legal exposure.

Corporate services officer Donna Bellingham said the works involved installing windows and doors, cleaning up of debris, painting the building with natural tones and remove the moss off the roof.

The District does not have estimated costs yet. Bellingham said they called six local places but they are “booked solid.” She said two are in the process of giving them quotes.

Coun. Heather Stewin asked what happens if there are pests, to which Bellingham said they will undertake measures if that poses a problem.

New contest for new flag

Council will undertake a new flag design contest after the 14 entries they received did not meet the criteria they set.

Thirteen designs did not meet the specified design criteria. Only one did, but the designer was not a resident, hence disqualifying him.

The new design must be based on the new brand colours and may only use official logos of the new brand.
