Marvin Elliot Cope

Marvin Elliot Cope, age 82, died peacefully in Hope, BC on March 22, 2017 after a courageous fight with cancer. Born on April 30, 1934 in New Westminster, BC, to Robin and Alice Cope, he grew up in Vancouver, BC and attended John Oliver Secondary. He then when on to graduate from both UBC in 1970 and then the University of Portland in 1980. Marvin met the love of his life Joan (nee Nabl) in 1954 and in 1957 they married and embarked on a life of love. In 1961, they moved to Hope, BC where he worked as a teacher and elementary school principal until his retirement in 1996. Marv will be especially remembered in Hope for his years of service on the School District and Hospital boards and his love for the Hope Golf & Country Club. Marv will be lovingly remembered by his wife Joan; his sons: David, Paul (Gillian), Andrew (Michele); daughters-in-law Susan and Tracey; his brother, Raymond (Mae); his grandchildren: Lindsay (Rob), Harrison, Dylan, Elizabeth, Hannah, Lauren, Spencer and Lyndon; and his great grandchildren: Emily, Simon and Ella. He was also a good friend and mentor to many. His passing has left a big hole in our hearts but we take solace in knowing that his legacy lives on in all of us and in the students he taught over his well-lived 82 years. Whether it was in the classroom, or taking a sick child home, or providing counselling to parents; he cared about his school and the Silver Creek, Laidlaw and Flood communities deeply. Many in the area viewed him as the Mayor of Silver Creek and at times he was asked to be its collective voice on issues; which he did with a passion. Our sincere thanks to the staff at Fraser Hope Lodge for their excellent care of Dad and our family. A Celebration of Marvin's life will be held on Saturday April 8th at 1:00 p.m. at Christ Church Anglican, 681 Fraser Avenue in Hope, with a reception to follow in the church hall. In lieu of flowers, and in keeping with Dad’s love of children please make a donation in his memory to the BC Children’s Hospital Foundation.
