The Valley Huskers evened their early-season BC Football Conference record at 1-1 with a 36-15 home field win over the Kamloops Broncos Saturday night.

The game was played at Chilliwack’s Exhibition Stadium.

Hometown fans saw the Huskers open up a 10-0 lead after the first quarter and a 13-1 lead at half time. They put the game out of reach with 16 third-quarter points and cruised to the final whistle.

Quarterback Josh Janssen led an unspectacular but efficient offence that accounted for 34 points on four touchdowns and two Ethan Homan field goals.

Janssen tossed three scoring strikes, one apiece to Reece Morrison, Ethan Porter and Mateo Tuioti.

The first-year quarterback completed 10 of 18 passes for 111 yards.

Running back Brandon O’Connor rolled up 56 yards and a touchdown on just eight carries, including a long of 34 yards.

Homan’s field goals came from 17 and 34 yards out, and he added the point-after on all four Husker majors.

The Huskers also had a two-point safety.

Chilliwack’s defense made life miserable for Broncos quarterback Matthew Wilson, who threw a lot but didn’t throw well. Wilson chucked up 30 passes, but only completed 10. While he had a touchdown toss to Ethan Schnerch, he also served up three interceptions.

Chavis Spencer had two for the Husker D, with Nick Gilberto also getting his hands on an errant pass. Desmond Jeanson had a fumble recovery.

Daniel Kabongo and James Moar each had quarterback sacks.

After starting the 2021 BCFC campaign with two straight home games, the Huskers hit the road for the first time this weekend when they visit Victoria’s Westshore Rebels Saturday (Sept. 18) afternoon.
