Improving services for our most vulnerable citizens

Even B.C.’s more rural communities are struggling with mental health, housing, and homelessness

A number of B.C. communities continue to grapple with issues around mental health, housing and homelessness and Hope is no different. I have been working to address gaps in service throughout our riding in Fraser-Nicola, particularly along the Fraser Canyon.

In some cases we see a lack of wrap-around services for clients of shelters, emergency and affordable housing facilities, as well as a lack of resources for individuals with multiple barriers and high mental health needs.

I believe a regional strategy encompassing various communities within Fraser Health, including Hope, is needed to ensure that each municipality is able to provide appropriate services to those who require them. I recently had some positive discussions with community representatives including Hope Mayor Peter Robb, who plans to initiate further talks on this possibility with his council as well as neighbouring mayors and councils.

Those discussions also involved the Hope and Area Transition Society (HATS) which has done an amazing job of responding to the needs of our community. The organization has expressed a need for more specialized Integrated Case Management services in the area, to address the varied needs of people with complex mental health and substance use issues.

Fraser Health has been able to provide one-time funding for a Mental Health Liaison Nurse and a Substance Use Worker, and I will be pressing B.C.’s Health Minister for core funding to make these positions permanent. The presence of these specialized staff members means that immediate, on-site help can be offered to Hope’s most vulnerable citizens.

Meanwhile if you or someone you love is in need of programs or services, please contact the Hope and Area Transition Society’s administrative office at 604.869.5111 or visit HopeTransition.org. Fraser Health’s website also lists various resources at FraserHealth.ca/your-community/Hope.
