Greg Laychack/ Progress file Competitors help each other over an obstacle at Charis Camp and Conference Centre in Popkum last year for the Camp Champ Challenge. The same event is happening this Saturday, for those adventurous enough to try.

Summer camp is a time for bonding, making memories, and even reaching new personal heights.

So, it would make sense that a fundraiser to support summer campers would have the same qualities. And the Camp Champ Challenge, on March 31, is a chance to grab a group of friends, co-workers or family members to visit Charis Camp and Conference Centre, and embark on a day-long adventure of obstacles, races, and fun.

Everyone is invited to the Popkum area campground for the day, to take part in the Challenge, watch the fun, listen to the live music, enjoy the barbecue lunch, bouncy castles, face painting, Starbucks coffee, or take in the free Easter egg hunt. And all the funds raised from the day will help make camp a better experience for the kids this summer.

For decades, Charis Camp has run on volunteer time and been able to keep their registration costs low to encourage campers to stay with them. But as life is getting more and more expensive, they decided last year to offer an honorium to their camp counsellors. So the Camp Champ Challenge was born.

It was such a success, providing honorariums for their hard-working counsellors and even helping kids who couldn’t afford camp take part, that they’ve decided to do it again. They’ve added new obstacles, and now have a 3km and 5 km course to choose from.

While they do prefer people to register online beforehand, they have kept a few timeslots open for walk-ins throughout the day. And the day isn’t just for the adventurous. They’ve opened their gymnasium for a more laid-back meeting area with a cafe for parents and a colouring area for the little ones. They’ve even invited the Chilliwack secondary school band out to play.

Krista Bennett, director of advancement at Charis Camp says they’ve been watching the forecast for Saturday and it’s looking sunny and warm so far.

Charis Camp is located at 51935 Hack Brown Rd. (off the Annis Road exit), and the event runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. For more information or to register, visit them online at www.chariscamp.com.
