The Fraser Valley Conservancy, based in Abbotsford, has planted 4,000 trees and shrubs in the last three years. The organization is currently holding a contests series, titled Go Green!

The Fraser Valley Conservancy (FVC) has launched a new contest series, called Go Green!, that is aimed at empowering local residents to adopt simple, plant-friendly habits at home.

Each contest runs for two months, beginning with a hands-on educational workshop. Throughout the contest, participants complete weekly challenges and log their activities using a free app on their phone to earn entries into prize draws.

Experts leading the workshops include Brittany Johnston (Queen B Seeds) for the composting workshop, City of Abbotsford staff for water conservation, and a team from BC Hydro for electricity savings.

The Composting Contest sign-up is open now, with tasks beginning April 26 (Earth Day).

The Saving Water Contest takes place in July, followed by the Saving Electricity Contest starting in September.

Patricia Fantillo, Step to It and volunteer program coordinator at the FVC, said by making small changes – such as increasing composting, saving water and using less electricity – the community will work towards the goal of reducing CO2 emissions by 100 tonnes between now and November.

"We want people to see how small changes can add up," Fantillo said.

In the past three years, FVC volunteers have planted more than 4,000 trees and shrubs, reducing CO2 emissions by more than 20 tonnes.

For the Go Green! contests, the organization has partnered with local businesses to offer a range of prizes, including restaurant gift cards and unique experiences.

To participate, residents must register before the contest begins.

To be eligible for the grand prize, participants must sign up before each contest begins and complete every challenge.

The contests are open to residents of the Fraser Valley Regional District aged 19 and older. Visit fraservalleyconservancy.ca/go-green-contest to enter or for more information.
