Girl Guides of Canada members are currently selling cookies in Chilliwack, and this year they’re asking people to buy them for someone else – seniors in care homes.

The 3rd Sardis Brownies had the idea to piggyback on the recent Adopt-A-Senior initiative at Christmastime and are now inviting folks to buy their chocolatey mint cookies by Feb. 9 for residents in care homes so seniors have a sweet treat for Valentine’s Day.

“Our goal is that every senior in every care home in Chilliwack will have a box of our cookies to brighten their Valentine’s Day,” 3rd Sardis Brownies said in an announcement.

Every year the young girls are required to sell a certain amount of cookies, and that has been quite difficult this past year thanks to COVID-19.

“This year our cookie campaign has been a challenge,” said Sandy Carey with 3rd Sardis Brownies.

They’re no longer able to go door-to-door nor sell outside places like grocery stores. They’ve been selling to family, friends and neighbours, plus people could order cookies online and have them delivered to their home for a fee.

It was a “huge challenge” for them, Carey said. “So we were forced to think outside of the box.”

Carey contacted the organizers of Adopt-A-Senior – a program where people bought Christmas gifts for seniors – and got permission to go ahead with a Valentine’s Day campaign.

Now all the Girl Guides of Canada groups in the two Chilliwack districts – Vedder Mountain (south side) and Chilliwack (north side) – are onboard with the idea to sell cookies all while making seniors happy.

Carey said she has no idea how many seniors there are in care homes in Chilliwack, but she’s sure they have enough cookies between the two local districts to fulfill their goal of getting a box of cookies to each one of them. One box of cookies costs $5, and so far they’ve sold about 150 boxes for the Adopt-A-Senior initiative.

“I’m really trying to push four boxes of cookies for $20 – it sponsors four seniors,” Carey added.

Cookies must be purchased by Feb. 9 to allow time for delivery and quarantine due to the pandemic. The cookies will be given to the seniors on Feb. 14.

If you’d like to buy a box (or four) of chocolatey mint cookies for Chilliwack seniors, email 3rdsardisbrownies@gmail.com. Tell them how many boxes you’d like to buy and they will send you the EMT (email money transfer) information. They are only accepting etransfers due to COVID-19.
