It’s time be a champ for campers, once again.
The third annual mud and obstacle course fundraiser, Camp Champ Challenge is on at Camp Charis, April 20. The event has become a Easter weekend tradition at the Popkum-area camp, where volunteers spend days setting up fun obstacles throughout the property.
There are a few changes to note this year, says Krista Bennet, the camp’s director of advancement. First of all, they have new obstacles “to keep it fresh” for those who have been before.
Secondly, they’ve moved the whole party to their field, where there will be lots of fun challenges and giveaways at the start line.
Bennet says they have been able to get some local sponsors, to help them reach their fundraising goal, too. The event was started so the camp could begin giving camp counsellors an honorarium for giving up their time over the summer. Often, the counsellors are past campers who are high school or university students, choosing to give up paid summer work for the chance to volunteer at the camp.
This year will include a small silent auction, and a family friendly and competitive options instead of age categories.
And, there is always the free Easter egg hunt for kids up to 12 years old.The day runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and registration is $40 for the 3K course, and $50 for the 5 K course, if pre-registered. The fees are $10 more for race day registrants.
