PHOTOS: Spirit of the People Powwow

Family Day weekend powwow was a colourful, vivid celebration of Indigenous culture

The Spirit of the People Family Day Powwow saw hundreds of dancers, drummers and spectators gather at Chilliwack Secondary School last weekend.

The two-day event featured host drum Travelling Spirit, plus several special dances including Family Team Dance, Owl Dance contest and Switch Dance.

An owl dance is similar to a waltz where two people of any age or gender dance together. During Saturday’s owl dance, there was a wide array of couples — women were seen dancing with babies, elders with children, men with men, etc.

Switch dancing is where men and women swap regalia and compete for fun.

The powwow was hosted by Spirit of the People Cultural Society in partnership with School District #33 Aboriginal Education Department.
