The Abbotsford-based BC Agriculture in the Classroom Foundation (BCAITC) participates in the 10th annual Canadian Agriculture Literacy Month (CALM) throughout March.

Each year, CALM encourages thousands of students across the country to celebrate Canada’s agriculture and food story.

CALM connects students with hands-on, interactive agriculture learning opportunities throughout March.

This year, CALM will be delivered virtually into classrooms with a Canadian kickoff by Marie-Claude Bibeau, Canada’s Minister of Agriculture and Agrifood.

To celebrate the month, BCAITC is launching virtual Ag-Reading Challenges for students from kindergarten to Grade 12.

Students can dig into great books, have fun, and learn about agriculture, all while earning virtual badges and the chance to win $1,300 in prizes.

BCAITC has also partnered with the Entomological Society of B.C. to provide 500 B.C. classrooms with a complimentary copy of The Bug Girl storybook (written by seven-year old Sophia Spencer) to facilitate learning about insects.

BCAITC is also launching a new lesson plan – Invent a Bug.

“Our CALM activities are sure to get students excited about agriculture literacy and foster a passion for lifelong learning,” said Pat Tonn, BCAITC executive director.
