Spring break is looking a lot different than expected for many families this year, with events cancelled, buildings closed and travel plans stymied by the coronavirus pandemic.

To help families keep up with some fun learning, the Chilliwack School District has collated a long list of ideas that are both online and offline.

They’ve created a page on their website titled Activities You Can Do At Home.

“Read for joy!,” they enthuse. “Books, websites, blogs, comics, podcasts, graphic novels… the reading choices are endless.”

It’s also a great time to game — offline, with traditional board games or trying a new one. They also suggest traditional puzzles, Sudoku, crosswords. There are plenty of ways to get messy outside, by gardening, hiking, or exploring parks.

The long list of suggestions also include: “Artwork, hiking, creating in the kitchen, Lego, card games, writing, build/create something, build a fort, and of course…clean your room!”

There is also a world of education to explore online. They break down the list, with hyperlinks to actual websites, by age range.

But for general interest, they remind parents that you can access audio and e-books through your child’s school’s library online catalogue, at https://destiny.sd33.bc.ca/.

There are also ideas on Read Write Think, Open School BC, the Exploratorium, and How Stuff Works.

Scholastic also keeps a list of podcasts online for those who love to listen to them. And for those wanting something extra involved, Citizen Science is collaborative research done by everyday people. Online visitors can search thousands of projects to match their interests, location, and favorite hobbies.
