Teenagers can experience a summer of science when a genomics program comes to Chilliwack.
Geneskool will take place at the University of the Fraser Valley's Chilliwack Campus July 7 to 11. It is open to kids entering Grades 9 to 12.
"This hands-on, week-long event promises to immerse students in the fascinating fields of molecular biology, biochemistry, biotechnology, and genomics," according to the program description.
Young scientists will take part in various lab experiments and activities guided by a storyline that explores forensics, environmental sciences, and biotechnology. The program features hands-on experiments, guest speakers, and the opportunity to investigate a forensic mystery.
Students will work with cutting-edge techniques such as fibre analysis, blood typing, microbiology, and microscopy.
Geneskool runs July 7 to 11, from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The cost is $350, and it is limited to 20 students. Financial support is available for students in need and BIPOC students (application required).
The program is through Genome BC, a not-for-profit organization supporting world-class genomics research and innovation to grow globally competitive life sciences sectors and deliver sustainable benefits for B.C., Canada and beyond.
