The Standard earned two awards at the British Columbia and Yukon Community Newspaper (BCYCNA) awards, and also three in the nationwide 2017 Canadian Community Newspaper Awards (CCNA).

Judges of the BCYCNA awards picked sports reporter Barry Stewart’s underwater photo of Hope RiverMonsters Swim Club swimmer Violette Freimark for a gold in the Sports Photo Award.

“Great capture — a unique angle, great composition and added technical effort to shoot underwater helped separate this image from the field. Well done,” wrote the judges.

The Standard also won third for its classifieds, with credit going to Janice McDonald.

“Nice mix of colour. Great use of white space and design of display ads. Well done!” said the judges.

The Standard has also been chosen for general excellence in its circulation category in this year’s CCNA. The Standard took third place for best all-round newspaper and best editorial page and second for best front page.
