There’s a very unique staff member at Cornerstone Christian School in Abbotsford.

She is seldom seen, but is responsible for many smiles and laughs just the same. Her name is Eunice the Unicorn. And while it sounds like she might be a mascot, she is so much more than that.

She has become the unofficial cheer squad in the few months she’s been at Cornerstone. She has visited sick students. She pops into classrooms after hours and leaves treats for the kids. They call them unicorn droppings, but really they’re Skittles.

With the first day of school just around the corner, Eunice has been waiting patiently for the students and staff, says vice principal Heather Thiessen.

Eunice is extremely shy, and most of the 200 kids who attend the school haven’t ever actually seen her in person. But Eunice has been caught on camera, both helping out and just going about a normal day at school. She has helped with polishing the floors, and even joined the crews who were working on summer maintenance.

“She was busy here with the renovations we had, and even did some paving,” Thiessen says. “She got herself in trouble with all contractors.”

Earlier this summer, Eunice went to California where she had some fun chasing birds on the beach.

“She loved that,” Thiessen says with a giggle.

And then last Sunday, Eunice even popped into a church service and interrupted the pastor, making kids in the pews giggle and endearing herself to their parents.

Eunice joined the school earlier this year, and has been a source of fun and distraction as everyone has been dealing with COVID-19 restrictions. She has taken everyone’s minds off of the news, Thiessen says, and something for the kids to look forward to.

Throughout the school year, she is more likely to be photocopying things, reading in the library, and playing in the playground.

But not many people know who Eunice really is, which is another source of fun around the school. Thiessen wants all the students who are gearing up for the first day of school to know that Eunice is ready for them.

“She misses the kids very much,” she says.
