Hope Secondary School held it’s year-end awards ceremony on Friday. Students were recognized for their academic and community achievements. The following are just some of the hundreds of awards handed out. Perhaps the biggest honour of the day was the Governor General’s Academic Medal which went to Grade 12 student Blake Hudie.

Cure for summer boredom

I cracked open a Latin/English Dictionary this morning (that’s just one of the crazy things we do at the library!) and the word that caught my eye was taedium. Which was translated as “boredom.” Interesting bit of serendipity because I was earlier going over some of the oodles of programs and draws and activities we have planned here for this summer.

A small crew of cyclists came through Hope on Friday afternoon, led by Ilan Levy, who is on a cross-Canada journey. Levy will cycle a total of 8,249 kilometres as he makes his way from B.C. to Newfoundland. He is riding to raise awareness of a small, Canadian non-profit organization called SchoolBOX.

The Hope Riding Club held it’s second event of the season on Saturday (June 11). The weatherman came through with a beautiful day, unfortunately the participation and the spectators were few.

SPCA wants new 'Petcasso'

With the deadline less than three weeks away, the BC SPCA urges all Pablo Petcassos to get their creative juices fired up to help animals across the province. Young artists up to 13 years of age have until midnight June 26 to submit original artwork for the 2011 Scotiabank & BC SPCA Paws for a Cause Kid’s T-shirt Contest.

Flower Festival returns to church

Christ Church, the oldest church on B.C.’s mainland, will again be the focus of floral arts. The second annual Flower Festival is scheduled to start on June 25 with tea, tours and displays. “Guests can enjoy tea, refreshments and guided tours through our decorated heritage church at 1 p.m. or 3 p.m.,” said Joan Sjovold, event organizer.
