Grown men and mousetraps might not be everyone’s idea of a funny Friday night, but that’s exactly what Agassiz Christian School is planning to bring to the community.

Agassiz Christian School has partnered with The Fidgets, a three-man improv group perhaps best known for their fundraisers using mousetraps and humour, to bring a night of comedy to Agassiz’s Agricultural Hall on Friday, Feb. 8.

During the main part of their show, comedians Dave Lane, Chris Reid and John Hollingsworth walk through mousetraps while blindfolded and in bare feet.

Typically, audience members purchase the mousetraps as part of a fundraiser, and the more mousetraps means more painful humour from the comedians. But that’s not what Agassiz Christian School had in mind.

“For us, it’s not buy a mousetrap because we want to get richer at school,” principal Judy de Waal explained. “It’s buy a mousetrap so the entertainment value will be greater.”

The school will not be hosting The Fidgets as a fundraiser for the school; instead, they wanted to bring in family-friendly fun as a bonus for the community.

“It doesn’t have any agenda except let’s just have some fun, and let’s open it up to as much of the community as we can,” de Waal said.

“That’s why we’re not having it here,” she added. “We could easily fit into our gym, but we thought, no, let’s go to a place where people are more comfortable to be.”

The show will take place at 7 p.m. at the Agricultural Hall (6800 Pioneer Ave) on Friday, Feb. 8. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for children and $30 for a family pack if bought in advance, and can be purchased at Agassiz Christian School (7571 Morrow Rd). Tickets can also be picked up at the Agassiz library.

The price of the tickets and mousetraps will go to cover the cost of bringing The Fidgets to Agassiz, de Waal said. The school is planning to give out free tickets to members of the local service groups and their families — the fire department, Kent Harrison Search and Rescue, and the RCMP — as a way of thanking them for their involvement in the community.

As for the rest of Agassiz, de Waal is hoping the night will be an opportunity to enjoy some humour during the “blah” time of mid-February.

“We really just want it to be a community fun event for families that kids can go to, from young to grandparents,” she said.

Agassiz Christian School administrator Karen Bruneski, who has done a lot of the work required to bring The Fidgets to Agassiz, agreed.

“Always when you have school events, the staff are heavily involved, the students are heavily involved, and therefore the parents are heavily involved,” Bruneski said.

“We really just wanted to back off and relax. Take a breather.”
