Hope residents will once again get the chance to win a giant pumpkin.

October is here and with it comes a chance for pumpkin fans to live out their dreams of owning a giant pumpkin.

The Hope Community Garden is once again hosting the Pumpkin Event, a community fundraiser taking place on Oct. 5. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., residents will get the chance to purchase blue pumpkins and win a giant pumpkin.

“Last year we grew a 566 pound pumpkin and the big one was 698 pounds,” said Barry Aubin via email. He grows the giant pumpkins. “The pumpkins were awarded to two people in town for picking the winning ticket and the other for the person guessing closest to the actual weight. And this year we are doing a similar thing.”

Taking place at the Community Garden, the fundraiser will offer people an opportunity to win the giant pumpkin by guessing its weight. Tickets for the raffle cost $2 for one ticket and $5 for three tickets.

In addition to the giant pumpkin, sugar pumpkins will be given away to kids for free (supplies for the sugar pumpkins are limited and are first come, first served). A hot dog sale will also be taking place, on site.

“You can make pumpkin pie with the sugar pumpkins,” Aubin said. “As for the giant pumpkin, it was a cold, damp, spring, so the pumpkins aren’t as big as last year. But it’s still the biggest pumpkin in Hope.”

All proceeds from the sales will go towards the community garden.
