An estimated 2,100 bags were hung on front doors and 840 bags of food were collected, showing once again the District of Hope is indeed a caring community. This 40 per cent rate of households that made contribution is more than twice the provincial average.

Over 6,700 pounds of food was collected in Hope, worth about $16,750. Over 526,126 pounds of food was collected in all of British Columbia, worth about $1,325,837.00.

Just to give a better idea how generous the town of Hope is, I made the following calculations.

Chilliwack, a population of approximately 84,000 collected 14,000 lbs of food. If they had been as successful as Hope (population of approximately 6,000), Chilliwack would have had to collect 94,000 lbs of food.

Or if Hope had the same return as Chilliwack, instead of 6,700 lbs of food, we would have collected 1,000 lbs of food.

Why did Hope do so well? It is due to the efforts of 121 different volunteers from various churches, the high school, the Scouts and private citizens who contributed 423 hours of service. Hope’s success is also due to the coverage through Facebook and by the local Hope Standard newspaper which helped make more people aware of the project. And thanks goes out to all the organization and the corporate sponsors who ensured there was no overhead cost to the project.

And a special thanks goes out to each household that made a contribution this year. Hope cares!

Ron Moller
