Overheard online: Banning retail sales of cannabis in Hope

On June 11, Hope’s Mayor and council gave first and second reading to a bylaw change which would prohibit “the use or approval of any planning or business related retail sale or dispensing of cannabis, as well as the sale of cannabis-linked paraphernalia or by-products (e.g. edibles or infused liquids, etc.)” under zoning bylaw 1428. The change will go to public hearing July 4, but it is already generating plenty of discussion online.

I am not at all surprised at this, such a backwards thinking “good old boys club” run this town. If it is not allowed here it will be allowed somewhere close by and the town will have once again lost out. Travel just a bit south and you will see dispensaries that sell it, funny I have never large crowds around these buildings and have never seen people being “high and disorderly.”

Get over it, it’s becoming legal in October so let the business get prepared and do their job. We don’t need bylaws we can’t enforce. We can’t enforce the ones that we have now. (Let) the business run but make sure they run properly

Chilliwack had (the) same issue! The solution was opened one on reserve land on Dyke Road and soon to open a second by Walmart! All managed by local band. Guessing some controversy but functioning without licence issued by town. Not trying to stir the pot, but seems ideal versus buying from streets.

So the feds say you can grow four plants at home, just think of all the grow op that will go up if you can’t buy it but you can grow it.

I don’t touch the stuff either but my upcoming municipal election vote won’t be to anyone on council who is voting to ban retail sales. That to me smacks of making decisions based on whatever outdated reefer madness or moralizing was brainwashed into you instead of looking at what the best available evidence is in regards to harm reduction. If you are arguing it is less harmful to obtain this from a street dealer than a dispensary, I don’t want your decision-making prowess on council. Plus the whole violation of other’s freedoms to not allow something just because you don’t personally approve always irks me. Get with the frickin’ times. Dave Mercier

Someone’s kid need to talk with their mom about what year it is and that goes for everyone: if your parents or family member is this shortsighted, it’s your job to shut them down.

Yet another thing the people of Hope will go to Chilliwack to spend their money on. How does it not make sense to council to keep that money within our town? Do we have such huge surpluses that we don’t need to create more revenue? Wake up, and listen to the people that pay their taxes in this town for a change.
