While it’s a sad time for any dog owner, putting Rover to rest may also be a more expensive one for Hope residents in 2019 and onward.

At the Jan. 14 District of Hope Council meeting, staff addressed the rising cost of the disposal of animal carcasses, specifically those belonging to domesticated canines, and recommended the amendment of local bylaw No. 1449, 2019 to increase the fees for euthanasia and cremation on large-breed dogs.

Previously, if a dog needed to be put to sleep, it was a $150 fee, plus another $150 for cremation, however, as the process is based on size, District staff suggested the inclusion of weight in the restructuring of carcass disposal fees.

After a brief explanation by John Fortoloczky, the District’s chief administrative officer, the motion was passed by the entire council.

For dogs under 146 pounds, the fees will remain the same, however, for dogs above that weight, euthaniasia will now cost $225, and cremation will be $200.
