Contraband with an estimated institutional value of $73,000 was seized Tuesday (Oct. 1) at Matsqui Institution in Abbotsford.

A press release on Thursday (Oct. 3) from the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) said the items included crystal methamphetamine, tobacco, two cellphones and chargers, four USB keys and a SIM card.

They were found due to the "vigilance of staff members," the release stated.

"The police have been notified, and the institution is investigating," CSC said.

The agency says it uses a number of tools to prevent drugs from entering its institutions. These include ion scanners and drug-detector dogs to search buildings, personal property, inmates and visitors.
