A decorating contest is encouraging Hope’s home and business owners to be “spook-tacular” this Halloween.

The Hope BC Bulletin Board, a Facebook group dedicated to Hope residents, is hosting a “Best in Hope” Halloween Decorating contest. Businesses and homes, that sign up, have until Oct. 30 to dress up in their Halloween best and convince four judges that they’re Hope’s best decorated building.

The contest is organized by Crystal Sedore, the Bulletin Board admin, and Sarah Preson from Kerfuffle Creations. First run in the early 2000s by Sedore, waning interest and COVID-19 put the contest on hiatus until now.

“Sarah told me, ‘you know, there are local businesses that really want to participate in this. Let’s do this again,’”says Sedore. “I think it will be really fun. There are people in Hope that go all out for Halloween.”

Those wishing to participate had until Oct. 20 to sign up (the form can be found here) and enter multiple categories including: People’s Choice — House, People’s Choice — Business, Best Entrance, Scariest, Wow Factor. Winners will be announced at the “witching hour” of Halloween and will receive a prize for their efforts. This year, participants have the chance to win one of many gift baskets — donated by local businesses — and certificates.

Sedore says if this contest goes well she may organize another one for Christmas.

“I’m here to acknowledge [people’s] hard work,” says Sedore. “It’s not easy, and it’s not cheap, to decorate for the holidays. But it sure raises community morale. And it makes it fun for the kids and the adults alike, to go around and see these displays.”

For more information, contact Sedore at 604-206-5544 or email her at crystal.a.sedore@gmail.com. You can also message her on Facebook (profile is Crystal Sedore) or mail to: Box 2002, Hope B.C., V0X 1L0.
