Noticing a few more moustaches around town?
Five firefighters from the Hope Fire Department are participating in Movember 2024 — an annual event and fundraiser “during the month of November to raise awareness of men’s health issues.”
“Movember is the leading charity changing the face of men’s health,” said Deputy Fire Chief Josh Westcott on the team’s Movember website. “Together we can make a difference for men’s health – in prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health and suicide prevention.”
Westcott, Daniel Dovzhenko (who is also the president of the Rotary Club of Hope), Sam Antonishka, Troy Leech, and Sean Fetterly are currently growing moustaches to raise money for the international campaign. Originally hoping to raise $1,000, the team has already surpassed this goal; as of Nov. 19, they’ve raised $1,024 and they’re hoping to increase this number before Nov. 30.
First started in 2003 by 30 men in Australia, the campaign has grown to: include 18 additional countries (Austria, Belgium, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Hong Kong, Germany, Ireland, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, UK and USA) since 2003; has had 6,861,045 participants since 2003; has had over 1,250 men’s health projects funded since 2003.
