It was an exciting moment for the Fraser Valley Regional Library’s Hope branch (Hope Library) after unveiling their new “Sword in the Stone” chainsaw wood carving on Saturday (Dec. 16).

Fun times were had by all as people marvelled at the carving (now permanently housed at the library) and got to enjoy stories read by Coun. Pauline Newbigging. Taking place from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., the library had a small crowd of kids and their parents, all who expressed enthusiasum over the new addition.

“Councillor Newbigging, in conjuction with the unveiling of the sword in the stone carving, (did) a reading at the library. She is actually the director of the library which is why she is representing the District of Hope,” said Mayor Victor Smith during the Dec. 11 council meeting.

Carved by Jacob Lucas during the 2023 Hope World Class Chainsaw Carving Event that took place from Aug. 17 to Aug. 20, Lucas’s stone with a crown of roses and thorns was one of three large carving entries bought by the District of Hope to be displayed permanently throughout Hope. Lucas also carved The Raven which sits at the entrance to the Hope and Area Recreation Centre’s lobby.
