RCMP officers are seen on Cheam Avenue in Agassiz on Thursday, Dec. 12, 2024.

A school was placed on hold and secure after a man, reportedly armed with a weapon, was arrested by police on Thursday in Agassiz.

RCMP received a report of an assault near the downtown area at 2:32 p.m. on Dec. 12. The incident unfolded right around the time that kids were dismissed from Agassiz Elementary Secondary School.

Police officers were able to "quickly" identify a male suspect, Cpl. Carmen Kiener, media relations officer with the Upper Fraser Valley Regional Detachment stated in a press release the next day.

Information was also received that the suspect had taken off on foot, was in possession of a weapon, and had made threats to the police, RCMP stated.

For the safety of the police and the residents in the area, a public safety noticed was issued.

"We went into a 'hold and secure' and gathered students who were outside on school grounds into the school and locked all the doors," Agassiz Elementary Secondary School principal Greg Lawley wrote in a statement. "The school buses had already left the school grounds."

The man was found and arrested a short time later without incident and is being held in police custody.

No information will be released on the charges he is facing. This was an isolated event and police do not believe there is any further risk to the public.

“We want to recognize the quick actions of the Agassiz RCMP frontline officers, as well as the Lower Mainland Integrated Police Dog Section and RCMP officers from nearby jurisdictions, who were able to resolve this incident quickly and safely,” Kiener said.
