Michael Bowcott is running as a candidate for the District of Hope byelection in April.

"I'm running because I like being part of the community," Bowcott said. "And I want to make sure that our tax dollars are spent wisely and correctly. And that the infrastructure that we rely on locally is maintained, and advanced, as we increase in our population, which is inevitable.

"And my ideas on helping the community are to sort of even keel things. To maintain things on an even keel level so it doesn't go too far one way or the other."

The District of Hope announced that Bowcott would be running for council, along with the other three candidates, last Friday evening (March 21). The position was originally filled by now-former Coun. Zachary Wells and became available after he resigned on Feb. 3.

As of present, Bowcott will be running against Magnus DuBeau, Nate Brown, and Bonny Graham for council.

This is his first time running for council however Bowcott did run for school trustee, for the Fraser Cascade School District 78, in the late '80s. While he didn't win, Bowcott said the experience was invaluable and will help him during this campaigning.

A local since 1978, Bowcott is the Sergeant of Arms for the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #228 (Hope Legion) and a volunteer firefighter with the Hope Fire Department. A semi-retired equipment operator who still works part time in the construction and paving industry, his previous jobs included: working as a commercial transport enforcement officer at various weigh scales throughout the province; working as a commercial transport inspector; and working for the Ministry of Transportation on highway construction and paving.

The byelection is taking place in April: General Voting Day will be on April 26; Advanced Voting will be on April 16 and April 23.
