While area mountains like Cypress and Whistler Blackcomb shutting down indefinitely due to COVID-19 concerns, two local mountains announced yesterday they would be following suit.

Sasquatch Mountain

Sasquatch Mountain Resort in the Harrison Mills area announced on Monday that they have decided to cease operations for the remaining 2019-2020 ski season due to COVID-19 concerns.

“”The safety and well-being of all Sasquatch Mountain Resort guests, staff and local residents is of the utmost importance to us, and we have continued to monitor local and global developments of the coronavirus while being in constant contact with local health officials for guidance during this time,” resort staff said in a statement effective end of day Monday. “Our guests, staff and community are at the heart of what we do and we feel it is our responsibility to do our part in reducing the potential spread of COVID-19.”

The closure includes all lift operations, food and beverage, the Yeti tube park and rental and retail services. Information concerning reimbursement for pre-booked lessons and pre-purchased lift tickets for upcoming visits is available through their website, www.sasquatchmountain.ca.

The guest services team can still be reached at 604-797-4411 or via email at info@sasquatchmountain.ca.

Though there will certainly be short-term impact, the resort staff was hopeful and they look forward to the summer.

“Regardless of the short-term impact, we will continue to plan for the future of Sasquatch Mountain Resort over the summer and look forward to introducing new summer operations and improvements to our upcoming winter season as well, with focus on continuing to be the best place for fantastic, family, fun!”

Manning Park Resort

Manning Park Resort will also be shutting down temporarily as of Wednesday, March 18 at 4 p.m. because of COVID-19 concerns. This closure is effective for at least two weeks and spring events have been canceled.

“Manning Park Resort, while sitting on a great deal of snow, recognizes it has a role to play in protecting the public and our staff,” resort general manager Vern Schram said in a statement.

The closure includes all areas of the resort, the lodge, cabins, food and beverage, the Nordic Centre and the ski area. The snowshoe and back country areas will, however, remain open.

Resort staff asks for patience while they prepare themselves for a deluge of emails and phone calls concerning spring break reservations.

“While we would have liked to finish the season, we recognize that we are dealing with extraordinary circumstances and we want to do our part,” Schram said. “We know this is disappointing news. We thank you for your understanding.”
