In a time of great devastation, Abbotsford’s Tradex has proven to be a beacon of safety for those impacted by B.C.’s wild weather and a useful facility for local officials seeking quick solutions.

The city of Abbotsford originally used the Abbotsford Recreation Centre as a reception centre, but quickly shifted to Tradex.

The Emergency Reception Centre was activated and created in five hours on the evening of Nov. 15. It is being run by the city of Abbotsford in collaboration with Emergency Support Services BC and Samaritan’s Purse, and with support from the Tradex team.

Craig Nichols, the executive director of Tourism Abbotsford, stated that Tradex has been seeing about 50 people use the facility per day, but not everyone stays overnight.

“Some come in for a brief time to get oriented and receive some immediate support for needs then go on their way,” he said.

He told The News that the city of Abbotsford has asked if Hall A would be available for four more weeks, and Nichols confirmed earlier this week that it can continue to be used for the time being. It is officially secured until Dec. 21, but extensions could be possible if needed. He noted that availability is open until January, as the next booked event is the Pacific Agriculture Show on Jan. 27, 2022.

“Our services as they are set up would be able to handle many more people if needed,” he said. “I’m not sure what the top end of capacity may be, but there’s lots of space at Tradex and it certainly appears there’s lots of support to meet a spike in demand if required.”

Nichols said he’s pleased to be on the front lines of the battle against the flood, and it’s been a surprisingly heartwarming experience to see the community come together.

“Overall, things here are good - lots of dry, warm space available,” he said. “Its been wonderful seeing so many people and agencies come together here to help people, and to see people accessing the site to get the help they need. We’re happy Tradex is available for use and is providing space to meet the community’s needs in a time of crisis. Community matters and its been on full display the past week at Tradex.”
