A new adult co-ed soccer league is starting soon in Hope.

Randy Taylor is leading the charge on a seven-a-side league for players ages 16 and up. He’s hoping to begin with six teams and said he has five-and-a-half teams already committed on paper.

“Now I just need them to register,” he said. “I have players from 16 to 67, at all levels of play.”

The league will run over eight Sunday evenings (6 to 7 p.m.) from April 24 through June 19. Games will be played at Hope secondary school (HSS) and possibly CE Barry, with no action over the May long weekend.

Taylor said it will be a fun non-competitive setup with no scores or standings kept.

Though he already coaches the junior and senior boys teams at HSS, Taylor thought there was a need for this, and says soccer is in his blood.

“The Taylor family has been committed to soccer and youth since my grandfather coached and managed three teams at the same time back in the 1930s,” he said. “My dad and his three brothers carried on the tradition and played a huge part in the development of the South Burnaby Mens Club (now south Burnaby Metro Club).

The first girls league in the province was started by them, and Taylor Park and Taylor Park Elementary School in Burnaby are named after us.”

He himself has been coaching for over five decades, guiding five year olds up to collegiate and professional athletes. He ran his own soccer school for 12 years and looks forward to fitting more of the sport into his life.

The cost per player for the new league will be $20, which will be used to cover insurance fees

A registration night held April 10 at HSS saw 30 players signing up, with more than a dozen players sticking around for a kick about.

A second registration night is schedule for April 17, 6 to 7 p.m. at HSS.
