Auction supports Syrian refugees

Annual McClary Stockyard event on Thursday, March 20

McClary’s Stockyard hosts its annual Make a Difference Sale on Thursday, March 20, raising funds for Canadian Foodgrains Bank, which assists impoverished people around the globe.

The auction begins at 10 a.m. at McClary’s stockyard on McClary Avenue off Sumas Way in Abbotsford.

Up for bidding will be a variety of donated items such as farm tools, pressure washers, toys, hockey tickets, gift certificates, and potatoes. Livestock will also be auctioned.

For every dollar raised by the auction, the federal government matches it four to one. Last year, the event raised $126,000.

This year’s proceeds will be used for Foodgrains Bank-supported projects in Syria that provide clean water and improve health care and nutrition for refugees.

Foodgrains Bank focuses on providing food assistance to communities internationally. To date, the organization has provided more than 1.1 million tonnes of food to people in need.

The bank is currently supporting a variety of organizations in Jordan and Lebanon, which are providing food to refugees in those countries who have fled the civil war in Syria.
