'Best year ever' for White Rock dog calendar

Legacy project raises more than $2,500 for Surrey SPCA

The newest edition of the Dogs of White Rock calendar has raised "more than ever" for efforts to assist furry friends at the Surrey SPCA education and adoption centre.

White Rock Seniors Village general manager Si Cussen said when all was said and done, the 2025 edition of the project started by beloved former resident Harold Zelt topped out at $2,575.

The total surpasses last year's calendar proceeds by nearly $700.

The funds "will help many animals," Cussen said.

Zelt's first calendar was released in late 2020, inspired by his love for dogs and all the photos he'd capture of local canines while out and about in the community in his electric scooter.

Sadly, the senior died in his sleep last spring, at the age of 97, just a couple of months after presenting SPCA officials with the $1,900 raised through the sale of his 2024 Dogs of White Rock calendar.

Following his passing, staff at WRSV and Zelt's children vowed to carry on the tradition in his honour. Over two days in July, a photo shoot was held at the Maple Street residence, with Zelt's son Mike capturing the adorable essence of a multitude of four-legged 'models' for the cause.

The latest funds bring the total raised by the calendar since its launch to around $10,000.

Cussen said the project will be repeated for at least another year, and dates for the 2026 Dogs of White Rock calendar photo shoot have already been set aside: July 13 and July 20.

Local dog owners are invited to bring their pooches out to pose – and watch them lap up 'pup cups' (whipping cream) – between noon and 2 p.m. on those dates.

The residence is located at 1183 Maple St.
