Camo-clad man carrying guns arrested in Chilliwack

Turns out the guns were trigger locked and the man was subsequently released by RCMP

A man walking down Young Road carrying two firearms was arrested Thursday morning by RCMP.

The incident was over quickly after several people called in the sightings, and front-line officers responded from the Chilliwack detachment.

“There never was any danger to the public,” said RCMP Cpl. Mike Rail, UFVRD spokesman. “The safety of the public is always our highest concern.”

Officers responding to the call at about 8 a.m. found the man strolling down Young Road carrying a shotgun and a rifle, and calmly arrested him.

They seized firearms, an ammo belt that was attached, as well as the firearms acquisition licence.

He was released soon after.

“The guns were trigger locked, and he had been walking to an area where he was going to do some shooting legally,” said Rail.

Neighbours were concerned enough about the guns to take to Facebook to ask about what they saw in the Chilliwack neighbourhood of Fairfield Island. They described a man in his 30s, wearing camouflage gear and a bullet belt, and carrying the guns, walking north on Young Road toward Island 22 Regional Park.

One witness said: “I drove by there and saw him. He’s wearing all camo clothes and looked like he had 2 guns holding one and one strapped to his back.”

The police investigation continues.
