Canada Post reiterates mask policy

Canada Post issued a reminder of their mandatory mask or face covering policy following an altercation at the Hope post office in which a customer was turned away for refusing to comply.

Canada Post spokesperson Valérie Chartrand said masks or face coverings have been required at all facilities across Canada, which applies to all employees, visitors and customers except for children under the age of five and for those receiving alternate accommodations under the Canadian Human Rights Act.

“Any customer entering a post office is required to wear a mask or face covering and practice physical distancing for the duration of their visit. This is part of our ongoing efforts to keep employees, and the people we serve, safe during COVID-19,” Chartrand said in a statement to The Standard.

Staff Sgt. Travis De Coene, spokesperson of the Hope RCMP, confirmed the police arrived at the scene and the customer left on their own accord.

“Our intention when we show up is to educate,” De Coene said. “We’re not here to litter the town with tickets. In this particular place, there actually is a policy in place.”
