Vandalism will not bring Canadians together “on the road to true reconciliation,” according to Chilliwack-Hope MP Mark Strahl.
The local MP’s office was targeted by vandals on Canada Day who used orange spray paint to send a message.
“Every Child Matters” was spray-painted on the front window, and “ECM” appeared on the doors and signage of MP Strahl’s Chilliwack constituency office on Vedder Road.
The damage was limited to spray paint and officials are checking to see if there is security footage of the incident.
“Canadians have been deeply impacted by the discovery of human remains in unmarked grave sites at a number of former residential school sites in recent weeks,” Strahl said in a statement. “Unfortunately, some have chosen to carry out acts of vandalism across the country, and they need to stop, because these illegal actions do not bring Canadians together on the road to true reconciliation that we must travel.”
The MP said he will forge ahead.
“I have committed to doing the work necessary to walk the path of reconciliation, and I won’t be deterred by those who seek to divide Canadians instead of seeking to bring us together.”
