If you were feeling the heat Wednesday, you weren’t alone.
Yesterday was the hottest August day on record, according to Roger Pannett, volunteer weather observer for Environment Canada, and the hottest day of the year.
Chilliwack joined a number of B.C. communities setting record-breaking heat.
Recorded at Pannett’s Sardis weather station, the temperature peaked at 36.2 degrees Celsius, which felt like 40 C because of the 23 per cent relative humidity.
That’s 10.6 oC above normal, Pannett said. “Today smashed previous date records of 35 C in 1960 and 1981, plus the previous all-time August max of 36.1 C on Aug. 9, 1960.”
Records also fell in other parts of the province, with Lytton hitting 40.6 C, breaking the old record of 40.4 C set in 1981.

Heat warnings continue today in Chilliwack. Environment Canada is predicting temperatures will again hit the mid 30s for the eastern Fraser Valley.
It will cool down for the weekend – with even a chance of showers – before heating up again early next week.
If the rain does come, it will be the first in 30 days, Pannett said.
