The Correctional Service of Canada has said the COVID-19 positive employees at Kent Institution contracted the virus in the community, not the prison.

Roger Sehra, acting-Assistant Warden Management Services at Kent Institution, said the maximum-security prison saw 10 employees test positive with COVID-19 between March 20 and March 30.

In an email to the Observer, he said he was able to confirm that the first few cases of COVID-19 “originated in the community and not from within the institution.” There are currently no inmates who have tested positive for COVID-19 at the prison, although 14 have been tested since Monday, March 29.

Corrections Canada rates sites that have COVID-19 cases using an integrated risk management framework, that outlines different risk levels and mitigation strategies.

Kent Institution is currently rated in the Moderate-High Risk, or Orange, level.

“We continue to work in collaboration with public health partners and other stakeholders to adapt our approach and take additional measures, as needed,” Sehra wrote in his email.
