A COVID-19 outbreak at Mission Memorial Hospital has infected six patients in a single unit, according to Fraser Health.
The health authority declared the outbreak on Oct. 6, after the evidence of transmission was found in a medicine unit. The outbreak is limited to the one unit, which has been temporarily closed to admissions.
“Fraser Health immediately implemented precautions, including enhanced cleaning as well as contact tracing to protect the health of all staff, medical staff, and patients,” says a press release.
The emergency department at MMH remains open and there are no other areas of the hospital affected by the outbreak, according to Fraser Health.
They say all patients and families of patients have been notified.
“It is critically important for people living in the Fraser Health region to get tested as soon as you have COVID-19-like symptoms, even mild ones,” said Fraser Health. Testing centres can be found at their website and booked online here.
As of Oct. 4, Mission currently has the lowest number of fully vaccinated residents in the entire Lower Mainland, at 71 per cent, according to the BCCDC.
The eastern Fraser Valley also has the highest daily rate of infection of all the Lower Mainland health areas. Chilliwack is currently the highest, with an average of 38 new cases per 100,000 reported daily – beating the Downtown Eastside’s 36.
Mission is recording 23 new daily cases per 100,000.
Just over a week ago, new COVID restrictions were imposed on the eastern Fraser Valley region as unvaccinated people were clogging up local hospital ICUs.
