Highway 1 through the Fraser Canyon was closed in both directions for eight hours Friday night after a major incident involving two semi-trucks and a train.

As first reported by CTV News and confirmed by the RCMP, two semi-trucks collided past Yale between Spuzzum and Hell’s Gate Friday, Jan. 8. The collision resulted in the cab of one of the semi-trucks ending up on the train tracks Cpl. Mike Rail with the Upper Fraser Valley RCMP confirmed. RCMP members described arriving on scene to ‘chaos.’

“The cab of one semi truck came to rest on the train track and then…was in a collision with the train,” Rail said. “[There was] a good samaritan on the scene who was trying to help the truck drivers when the train came along,” he said, adding that the person was trying to pull a driver out of the cab before the train hit and suffered minor injuries.

Three people were transported to hospital with non-life threatening injuries, Rail said, this included the drivers of the two semi-trucks and the good samaritan.

Ambulance crews with BC Emergency Health Services as well as police and Hope Volunteer Search and Rescue attended the scene of the crash.

DriveBC reported the highway was clear and re-opened as of 12:17 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 9.

The cause of the collision remains under investigation by the Boston Bar RCMP.
