Kent Institution correctional officers seized more than $40,000 worth of crystal meth at the prison on Wednesday.

A package containing a cell phone and 80.2 grams of crystal methamphetamine with a total estimated institutional value of $46, 500 was seized “as a result of the vigilance of staff members.”

In a release from the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC), Kent Institution says it uses “a number of tools to prevent drugs from entering it’s institutions” including scanners and drug-detector dogs for searching buildings, inmates, visitors and personal items.

CSC “is heightening measures to prevent contraband from entering its institutions in order to help ensure a safe and secure environment for everyone,” it states. “CSC also works in partnership with the police to take action against those who attempt to introduce contraband into correctional institutions.”

All federal institutions have a telephone tip line for additional information about activities relating to CSC security. “These activities may be related to drug use or trafficking that may threaten the safety and security of visitors, inmates and staff members working at CSC institutions.”
