UPDATE w/ VIDEO: Chickens killed in fire that destroyed Chilliwack barn Tuesday

Poultry barns on same property burned to the ground in August 2020

A chicken barn in Rosedale burned to the ground Tuesday morning in a blaze that killed “several” chickens, according to the Chilliwack Fire Department.

Approximately 45 firefighters responded to the barn fire shortly after 10:30 a.m. on July 27.

Flames and smoke were already billowing from more than one building at Castleman Road near Standeven Road when crews arrived.

The Chilliwack Fire Department (CFD) reported that crews secured a water supply from a nearby hydrant and put multiple hoses on the fire.

“Despite being challenged by high ambient air temperatures and a quickly-spreading fire, crews were successfully able to prevent the spread of the fire to adjacent barns,” according to a CFD press release.

RCMP members had roads in the area blocked as bystanders watched the blaze from a distance.

These barns that burned to the ground were brand new, as they were at the same address of a fire that destroyed the previous chicken barns on Aug. 7, 2020.

There was no immediate word on the cause of the fire, but by noon the structure was destroyed and fire crews were mopping up the scene.

The CFD reported there were no civilian or firefighter injuries “however several chickens were reported to have perished in the fire.”
