Firefighters battle structure fires

Hope Fire Department responds to more than a dozen calls for various issues in 10 days

Local firefighters were called to a structure fire on Hemlock Avenue last Thursday.

"A resident accidentally caught the side of a detached garage on fire while using a torch to burn weeds, a practice that is not recommended," said fire chief Tom DeSorcy. "It was extinguished by the occupant prior to our arrival and fortunately damage was minimal."

Earlier in the week, nine firefighters also responded to a blaze on Silver Skagit Road involving an RV or travel trailer.

The unit was fully engulfed in flames upon arrival, but was quickly extinguished with no impact to the nearby forest or attached propane tanks. The occupant of the trailer was not home at the time. The cause of the fire is unknown.

Between July 16 and 26, Hope Fire Department received 11 calls for various other issues and public concerns.
