After 11 years at the helm of the Fraser-Cascade school district, Dr. Karen Nelson has announced her retirement.

A letter was included in the upcoming school board package to be read at the Jan. 21 meeting. Nelson has served the Fraser-Cascade district for 29 years, with the past 11 as superintendent.

Her official retirement date is Aug. 1, 2020.

“It has indeed been an honor and a pleasure to work in School District No. 78 (Fraser-Cascade),” she wrote. “I want to thank the Board of Education for your commitment to working in partnership with me to support my growth and professionalism in each of the roles I have fulfilled, particularly in the role of superintendent. I have grown in my capacity to serve as an educational leader under your corporate supervision, and I have learned so much from individual trustees over the course of my appointment.”

In her letter, Nelson thanked the board, the staff, parents, students, community members, and educational partner groups.

“My work as an educational leader has been strengthened by the Board’s commitment to working with and through our partner groups in order to remain responsive to our communities and relevant to our students’ learning needs and interests,” she says. “I remain dedicated to School District 78 (Fraser Cascade) and thank you for the time you have given me to serve the students of this district in a variety of roles, particularly in the capacity as superintendent of schools.”
