Heavy rain continued to drench Chilliwack and the Fraser Valley on Monday, Nov. 15, after an all-time rainfall record was set the day before.
Environment Canada’s rainfall warning for up to 250 mm of rain by end of the day is still in effect for the Fraser Valley from Abbotsford to Hope, with strong winds expected by afternoon of 70 km/hr gusting to 90 this afternoon near Hope.
Highest rainfall amounts so far from 180 to 200 mm have been over the Eastern Fraser Valley. Additional rainfall amounts near 50 mm coming today.
Winds and heavy rain should subside by evening, according to the Nov. 15 EC forecast.
“This long episode of heavy rain could result in possible washouts, debris flow and pooling water as rising freezing levels will also melt snow at higher elevations. Local river levels will rise and river flows will increase as a result of the heavy rain,” according to the Nov. 15 rainfall warning from EC.
Total rainfall on Sunday, Nov. 14 in Chilliwack was measured at 154.6 millimetres, according to Roger Pannett, Chilliwack’s volunteer storm watcher for Environment Canada.
The Sunday total broke the rainfall record set for that day in 1896, which was 53.6 mm.
“Continuous rainfall with present storm total since 2 p.m. on Nov. 13 is now at 195 mm of rain.”
Daily and monthly records fell Sunday, and an all-time rainfall record was set on Nov. 14, 2021 with the 154.6 mm.
Previous all-time wettest November day was 115.8 mm on Nov., 2, 1955.
Previous all time record for the wettest day was set on Dec. 13, 1979 with 122.6 mm, said Pannett.
Chilliwack rainfall records began being kept in 1879.
