RCMP confirm one person died in Monday’s multi-vehicle crash on Highway 1 in Chilliwack.

According to the Fraser Valley Traffic, a pickup truck slammed into the back of another vehicle in the left-hand lane, driving it under the vehicle in front of it.

A female passenger died at the scene. Another male passenger was airlifted to hospital with serious injuries.

Others involved in the collision were taken to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The crash occurred at around 4:30 p.m. near the Vedder Road off ramp in the westbound lane.

Police say traffic was heavy at the time, possibly due to an early accident farther east.

Numerous vehicles in the left lane were slowing due to congestion, police say, when the pick-up drove into the rear of one of the vehicles.

The impact was so severe the car struck by the pickup was nearly buried beneath the SUV ahead of it.

Alcohol was not a factor in the collision, police say.

Highway 1 eastbound was reduced to a single lane, while Highway 1 westbound was diverted off the highway at Vedder Road while police and collision analysts investigated the collision.

Highway 1 was completely re-opened around 11 p.m.
