David Langlet was serving life for first degree murder in shooting death in Surrey

A man who had just begun serving a life sentence for first degree murder has died at Kent Institution.

David Langlet, from Langley, was convicted on Dec. 9 2013, 13 years after Shane Murray Preece was shot dead in a Jeep Cherokee near J.D.’s Family Restaurant in North Surrey.

Customers at the restaurant who had stepped outside for a cigarette reported hearing several shots coming from the alley, just before midnight on June 12, 2000.

It wasn’t until October 2013, after the Surrey RCMP Unsolved Homicide Unit reopened the case, that police arrested and charged Langlet.

Langlet had no possibility of parole for 25 years. Correctional Service Canada said he was found unresponsive in his cell on Friday, May 9, While staff members performed CPR immediately and emergency services were called, Langlet could not be resuscitated.

As in all cases involving the death of an inmate, the police and the coroner have been notified, and CSC will review the circumstances of the incident. His next of kin have been notified.
