VIDEO: Body discovered in aftermath of Hope apartment fire

RCMP can’t confirm cause of death yet, but have ruled out foul play

A small fire in a Hope apartment building was quickly brought under control on Tuesday afternoon.

But when the smoke cleared, first responders discovered a body in the complex.

“Hope RCMP can confirm the remains of one person was located inside of a complex apartment,” Cpl. Mike Rail confirmed Wednesday. “The RCMP, BC Coroners Service and Hope Fire Department are in the initial stages of their investigation. At this point in the investigation there is no evidence to suggest the fire was caused by a criminal act.”

It’s not clear whether the person died prior to, or due to, the fire.

The fire was in a ground floor suite at King’s Court apartments on Park Street. Smoke was billowing out of the patio door, and everyone was evacuated from the building.

One resident, Eleanor Burnside, managed to get her cat Bibi into a cat carrier before being evacuated.Watch for more on this incident in Thursday’s Hope Standard.
