A tree has fallen and power poles have snapped after an early Wednesday morning windstorm in the Hope area.

Park Street between 3 and Fraser avenues is blocked off after a tree fell over the road, narrowly missing homes in the area. Two power poles also snapped on a powerline running along 3 Ave. and the crossing with Wallace St., crews have put cones around the affected area.

Around 2 a.m. Wednesday morning, windspeeds of 54 gusting to 100 kilometres per hour were observed in Hope according to the federal Department of Environment and Natural Resources.

Councillor Victor Smith informed The Hope Standard that the power is out at district hall for the remainder of Wednesday, Jan. 13.

Across the Lower Mainland 100,000 BC Hydro customers were without power after the storm, with the hardest hit area being Abbotsford. “As the storm is moving its way across the province, its causing extensive damage to BC Hydro’s electrical system due to branches and trees breaking contacting its equipment,” said an operation update from BC Hydro Wednesday morning.
