May 22 marks the start of Safe Boating Awareness Week, and the RCMP asks people to stay safe on the water this summer.

“A sound decision can prevent injury or worse on the water,” said RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Mike Rail. “We remind everyone that understanding the environment and realizing your ability is essential when enjoying the lakes and waterways of our region.”

Rail offered some tips for an enjoyable boating experience.

- Wear a personal flotation device

- Boat sober. Impairment and water do not mix.

- Prepare and plan before you sail

- If you haven’t already, take a boating course

Safe Boating Awareness Week continues through May 28 and more safety tips can be found online at the Canadian Safe Boating Council website.
