Starting in the fall of 2021, Sardis secondary football will be played on the Rick Klassen Field.

The Chilliwack school board has approved the naming of the field, after ironing out some concerns over naming protocols.

The board was in support of naming the field after Klassen, who is arguably the most famous Falcon alumna. Klassen played for the B.C. Lions and led the team to a Grey Cup championship in 1985. He died from cancer in 2016.

But some trustees wanted to ensure that they had done their due diligence, as per policy, in consulting with the community and the city of Chilliwack. The city had provided the Falcon Football Alumni Committee a letter of support, which was presented to the board at the Jan. 12 meeting.

They noted that they were impressed by the work of the committee, and the extra work trustee Jared Mumford did to reach out to Klassen’s sister for her support.

Five trustees voted in favour of the naming, and David Swankey abstained.
