An employee’s chase to retrieve stolen goods could have ended badly, according to Hope RCMP, after a weapon was drawn on them.

A 30-year-old Surrey man has been arrested after stealing several items from a business Tuesday morning (March 28), located on the 1100 block of 4th Avenue, and threatening the store’s employee. The employee told police that they gave chase after the man grabbed several items, and fled without paying, only for the man to threaten them with a weapon.

“Although this had a good ending, this highlights the risk of attempting to chase down a suspect,” said Staff Sgt. Dwayne Farlin. “This could have ended in injury, or worse, to the employee. [We] recommend that the public observe and report, and not attempt to apprehend a suspect.”

Police, who were on patrol in the area and were able to locate the suspect quickly, said they are recommending charges of theft, uttering threats, assault with a weapon, and breach of probation.
